Base Lodge Expansion (BLE) Proposal

Key Updates and Next Steps

Dear Members,

I am excited to share updates on the Base Lodge Expansion (BLE)—a proposal that reflects our commitment to creating a space that meets the evolving needs of our Craigleith community. This project is a key step in shaping our club’s future, and I am deeply grateful for your continued support and engagement throughout this journey.

Leadership and Coordination

The BLE proposal has been thoughtfully developed by a dedicated team. If approved, I, as General Manager, along with Project Manager John Banfield, will work collaboratively to oversee the execution of the build. Together, we will bring our extensive expertise and deep understanding of Craigleith’s unique needs to ensure the project’s success

In any initiative of this scale, successful delivery depends on collaboration between key roles, including the design team, contractors, and operational leaders. John and I are working closely to ensure seamless coordination and consistent oversight of every aspect of the project.

My Background: With over 30 years of experience managing construction at Craigleith, I have overseen critical projects such as the Maintenance Facility, Snowmaking Building, Base Lodge, North Lodge Renovation, and all lift installations. My familiarity with local trades and Craigleith’s operations allows me to ensure a smooth transition through every phase of construction, from service disconnections and demolition to structural installations.

John Banfield: John brings over 30 years of project management expertise, with a portfolio that spans complex infrastructure, sports facilities, and community spaces. He has contributed to major projects such as the Osler Bluff Ski Club Clubhouse, the $250M Air Canada Centre, the $75M BMO Field, and the $800M TTC Relief Line South. At Craigleith, John is collaborating with Normerica and the project architect to finalize designs, select sub-trades, and oversee flawless execution of the BLE. His extensive expertise in design, budgeting, and stakeholder engagement makes him an invaluable asset to this project.

Phases of Construction

The BLE will be executed in well-defined phases designed to minimize disruption and deliver results efficiently:

  1. Removal of the South Lodge: Addressing structural and compliance challenges, this phase will eliminate escalating maintenance costs and set the stage for a modern facility.
  2. Structural Groundwork and Foundation Installation: Durable materials, including concrete, steel, and core slabs, will establish a solid foundation for the new lodge.
  3. Post-and-Beam Construction: Normerica’s renowned craftsmanship will bring the lodge’s striking design to life, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal.
  4. Interior Enhancements: We will upgrade member spaces, including expanded food and beverage services developed in partnership with FS Strategy, to elevate the Craigleith experience.

 Commitment to Long-Term Value

Financial sustainability remains a cornerstone of this project. By leveraging initiation fees, capital levies, and careful borrowing, we have ensured that the BLE will not require special assessments or unexpected costs. The expanded amenities—including family lockers, upgraded washrooms, and improved dining spaces—have been thoughtfully designed to maximize long-term value for our members.

A Broader Vision for Craigleith

While the BLE is an important focus, it’s part of a larger effort to improve our club for current and future generations. This summer, we are also upgrading the National and V-Hill lifts with essential electrical updates. These upgrades are part of our long-term plan to refurbish all chairlifts every 15 years, ensuring reliability, safety, and member satisfaction. Together, the BLE and these lift improvements reflect our commitment to maintaining Craigleith’s legacy while enhancing your experience.

Looking Ahead

The Base Lodge Expansion, along with other key projects like the lift upgrades, is more than just construction—it represents our shared vision for Craigleith’s future. Thank you for your continued support as we bring these plans to life. I will keep you informed with regular updates and encourage you to share your thoughts and ideas along the way. Together, we are building a stronger, more vibrant Craigleith for today and tomorrow.
